LONGMONT — Just getting into a Lotus Elise can be a challenge, but this is not a car built for comfort or convenience — it’s built to go fast, very quickly.

“It’s all brakes and engine,” said Shane Cooper, owner of Altitude Dream Cars, which opened in Del Camino last month. Cooper’s company rents exotic automobiles. He and his wife, Jodi, got the idea for the company when they wanted to rent one themselves and realized there was no place in Colorado to do it.

Cooper launched his company with the literally red-hot 2005 Lotus, a Mercedes CLS500 and a fully loaded Hummer H2.

The Lotus — a six-speed, two-seat convertible — has been the most popular rental so far, Cooper said. You can barely get through “one-Mississippi” when pulling away from a stop sign before it hits 80 mph. It’ll go from 80 back down to a stop in about the same amount of time.

The 190-horsepower engine might sound undersized, until you learn the car weighs only 1,900 pounds. (read more)
